Open source languages are available for Windows. Python has a Windows interpreter as does Shoes (which is Peril based). I’m pretty sure there are others. Borland occasionally gives away free versions of Delphi also.

The snag is, you need to track them down and install them. If you want open source programming on a Windows PC my advice is to dump Windows and install a Linux distro. Ubuntu makes a really good desktop distro and comes complete with all the free open source programming tools you can shake a stick at and there’s a tone of sample code and free tutorials.

FYI Visual studio comes with sample code albeit not a huge amount. MSDN is also one of the best resources I’ve found to learn programming. There really isn’t one path to get from basic to C#, you have to buy books and read. I’ve been programming in windows since I was 12 and have always found it easy. Honestly, its what you grew up with. If you want samples of what you can try, go to codeplex. The internet and your local bookstore are repositories for the plethora of info that’s out there.

Windows programming isn’t easy because there is so much to it. EG, if you want to game program, you can learn DirectX, OpenGL, use the default windows forms, or get something like XNA. All of which have HUGE communities filled with sample code and helpful forums. I have been able to pick up any new API, any new language within windows within a month. Try harder, don’t just bitch.

Everyone is quick to say the grass isn’t greener on the other side to defend themselves. Write a follow up AFTER you learned windows and I will take it seriously.
